Human rights and sensible care!

What do beaurocrats know about dementia ?

There may be some in the European court of Human Rights who have personally experienced a loved one living with the later stages of dementia.

However how did it ever come to pass that any elderly person has to fall out of bed before the cot sides are allowed to be used ?

This was a true life situation in a residential home. Someone I spoke to last week mentioned that her mother was in residential care and  receiving end of life care.

The staff were unable to put the cot sides up on the bed as it was a contravention of her human rights.

She fell out of bed. The cot sides were allowed !

Did no one stop to consider the implications in allowing her to fall ? This may have resulted in her breaking something which would  not only have caused her pain and distress but needed hospitalisation which would have caused further stress and disorientation.  Also what about the avoidable cost to the NHS ?

Am I once again being idiolistic. Surely human rights and sensible care are one and the same?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this ?

  1. I am totally with you Caron, it’s absurd ! What someone may have to potentially go through to get a result, it’s so wrong !
